Nigeria Approves Satellite Licences for Kuiper, BeetleSat, and Satelio to Boost Broadband Access

Nigeria has taken a major step toward strengthening its digital infrastructure by granting satellite communication licences to global operators, including Amazon’s Project Kuiper, BeetleSat, and Satelio IoT Services.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) confirmed that the companies have been issued seven-year permits under its commercial satellite communications framework. The move is aimed at attracting investment and expanding next-generation internet services across the country.
Expanding Satellite Internet in Nigeria
Under the approvals:
Kuiper Systems, a subsidiary of Amazon, will deploy its 3,236-satellite constellation to deliver high-speed internet services across Nigeria from February 2026 to 2033.
BeetleSat, developed by Israel’s NSLComm, will operate a 264-satellite network focused on advanced communication services.
Satelio IoT Services, based in Germany, will support Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity using a planned 491-satellite system, though deployment is still ongoing.
These companies now join SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, which already operates satellite broadband services in Nigeria.
Driving Next-Generation Connectivity
The NCC noted that the approvals are part of its strategy to open Nigeria’s telecom sector to non-geostationary satellite orbit (NGSO) systems, which offer faster and more reliable internet connectivity compared to traditional satellites.
This initiative is expected to:
Expand internet access to underserved and rural communities
Improve connectivity for businesses and digital services
Align Nigeria with global advancements in satellite technology
Strengthening Africa’s Largest Telecom Market
As Africa’s largest telecom market, Nigeria continues to attract global tech investments. The expansion of satellite broadband is seen as a key driver for:
Digital inclusion
Economic growth
Innovation in sectors like fintech, e-commerce, and smart agriculture
A Boost for the Digital Economy
With increasing demand for reliable internet, the entry of multiple satellite providers is expected to enhance competition, improve service quality, and reduce connectivity gaps across the country.
This development marks another milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward a more connected, technology-driven economy, positioning it as a leading digital hub on the continent.
