NCC and REA Join Forces to Expand Nigeria’s Digital Infrastructure with Renewable Energy

Nigeria has taken another significant step toward strengthening its digital economy as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) have entered into a strategic partnership to improve digital connectivity through renewable energy solutions.The collaboration was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during a stakeholder workshop held in Abuja. The event focused on developing practical strategies to bridge Nigeria’s energy and telecommunications infrastructure gap while accelerating broadband expansion in underserved communities.The initiative recognizes that access to reliable electricity and digital connectivity are closely linked. Communities without stable power often struggle to sustain telecommunications infrastructure, while areas lacking internet access are unable to fully benefit from modern economic and social opportunities.Under the agreement, both agencies will coordinate infrastructure planning by sharing geospatial information on existing and proposed projects. This data-driven approach is expected to help identify locations where electricity and connectivity can be deployed simultaneously, reducing duplication of efforts and improving project efficiency.The partnership also aims to encourage the use of renewable energy to power telecommunications facilities such as mobile base stations and fiber-optic repeater sites. Where feasible, telecom infrastructure may also be installed alongside REA-developed energy projects, lowering operational costs while extending network coverage to rural and underserved communities.Speaking on behalf of the NCC leadership, officials emphasized that integrating energy and telecommunications infrastructure is essential for building an inclusive digital economy. They noted that combining both sectors will create stronger foundations for economic growth, education, healthcare, innovation, and digital services.Representatives of the Rural Electrification Agency highlighted the growing importance of clean energy in supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation. According to the agency, renewable energy mini-grids provide a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to diesel-powered telecommunications facilities while creating new investment opportunities for both the energy and telecom sectors.The stakeholder workshop brought together government officials, telecommunications operators, renewable energy developers, investors, financial institutions, and development partners to discuss implementation strategies, financing options, regulatory considerations, and pilot projects that can accelerate nationwide deployment.Industry experts agreed that stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors will be critical to achieving the Federal Government’s digital economy objectives. They stressed that practical financing models, supportive regulations, and coordinated infrastructure planning will be necessary to ensure long-term success.With this agreement, the NCC and REA aim to expand broadband access, improve rural connectivity, promote clean energy adoption across telecommunications networks, and build resilient digital infrastructure capable of supporting Nigeria’s long-term socio-economic development.
