The Federal Government has committed approximately ₦12 billion to support digital economy research projects across Nigerian universities, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence (AI), digital connectivity, and digital literacy.
The investment is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s technology talent pipeline, expanding research capacity, and positioning the country to compete more effectively in the global digital economy. The funding will support research initiatives that address national priorities such as broadband expansion, emerging technologies, innovation-driven entrepreneurship, and workforce digital skills development.
According to government officials, the initiative is part of broader efforts to align higher education research with Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda, ensuring universities play a central role in producing solutions for real-world economic and social challenges.
The programme is expected to encourage collaboration between academia, industry, and government, while also providing students and researchers with access to resources needed to explore cutting-edge technologies, particularly in AI and data-driven innovation.
Experts say the move could significantly boost local innovation, reduce reliance on foreign technology solutions, and enhance Nigeria’s ability to develop home-grown digital products and services. By prioritising digital literacy, the initiative also seeks to expand access to digital skills across institutions, helping to close the skills gap in Nigeria’s fast-growing tech ecosystem.
As Nigeria accelerates its digital economy ambitions, the ₦12 billion research investment signals the government’s commitment to building a knowledge-driven economy powered by skilled talent, innovation, and sustainable technological growth.
