Nigeria Launches Ambitious Digital Literacy Initiative to Equip Millions with 21st-Century Skills

The Federal Government has unveiled a major digital literacy initiative aimed at equipping Nigerians with essential digital skills to thrive in today’s technology-driven economy, marking a key milestone in the nation’s digital transformation agenda  .

Announced during the inauguration of the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) for the National Digital Literacy Conference in Abuja, the programme aims to train and certify millions of Nigerians in foundational and emerging digital competencies, including the use of digital tools, online safety, digital entrepreneurship and artificial intelligence awareness  .

The committee — inaugurated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, through a representative — has been tasked with coordinating nationwide rollout and oversight of the initiative, which has been aligned with the Federal Government’s Digital Transformation Agenda and the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda  .

While the initiative is fully funded and executed by ClergyWealth Cooperative Society Limited, a private empowerment organisation, the government’s role underscores strategic support for deepening digital skills across society without bearing direct financial obligations  .

Training for the Digital Age

The programme will initially focus on training and certifying one million Nigerians through structured modules spanning six months, with participants receiving internationally recognised certificates upon completion. Beneficiaries who successfully complete the training will also be equipped with laptop computers to support their productivity and further learning  .

Officials said the training will cover basic digital literacy concepts, effective use of digital devices and platforms, digital safety best practices, and foundational knowledge of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence — preparing participants for opportunities in the digital economy and remote work sectors  .

National Impact and Long-Term Vision

The initiative builds on Nigeria’s broader efforts to integrate digital skills development into formal education systems and workforce readiness strategies. Government agencies, including the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), have previously launched complementary programmes to train teachers and master trainers, ensuring digital literacy spreads through all levels of the educational ecosystem  .

By strengthening human capital in digital skills, policymakers hope to position Nigeria as a competitive player in the global tech landscape, foster innovation, and bridge the digital divide for underserved communities across the country.

As the rollout progresses, stakeholders emphasise the importance of inclusivity — ensuring that youth, women, persons with disabilities and residents in rural areas benefit from expanded access to digital learning opportunities.
