The Federal Government has called on public servants across Nigeria to strengthen their artificial intelligence (AI), digital, and leadership skills as part of efforts to accelerate the country’s digital transformation and improve public service delivery.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, made the call during the July 2026 edition of the Digitalisation in Government Community Engagement held in Abuja. He stressed that developing digital capabilities within the public sector is critical to building a modern, efficient, and citizen-centred government.
According to the minister, technology alone cannot transform government institutions without a workforce equipped with the knowledge and skills to effectively deploy digital tools and emerging technologies. He noted that public servants must embrace continuous learning to keep pace with rapid technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence.
Tijani said the Federal Government remains committed to implementing policies and programmes that enhance digital capacity across ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs). He explained that equipping civil servants with AI and digital competencies would improve decision-making, increase productivity, streamline public services, and foster greater transparency and accountability.
The minister highlighted ongoing initiatives under the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy aimed at expanding digital literacy, promoting innovation, and strengthening Nigeria’s digital economy. These initiatives include AI training programmes, digital skills development, and partnerships with local and international technology organisations to prepare Nigerians for the future of work.
He also encouraged public institutions to adopt digital-first approaches in service delivery, noting that emerging technologies such as AI, cloud computing, and data analytics can significantly improve government efficiency and citizens’ access to essential services.
Industry stakeholders at the event described digital capacity building within the public sector as a key driver of national development, noting that a digitally skilled workforce would enable Nigeria to compete more effectively in the global digital economy.
The government’s renewed emphasis on AI and digital skills aligns with its broader ambition of positioning Nigeria as a leading digital innovation hub in Africa while creating a more responsive, transparent, and technology-driven public service.
