More than 1,800 leaders from over 90 countries and regions convened in Dalian, China, for the 2026 Annual Meeting of the New Champions—widely known as Summer Davos—to explore how innovation, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital transformation can drive sustainable economic growth and create jobs worldwide.Organized by the World Economic Forum under the theme “Innovating at Scale,” the gathering brought together heads of government, business executives, entrepreneurs, investors, researchers, and technology pioneers to discuss practical strategies for turning technological breakthroughs into real economic value.Chinese Premier Li Qiang joined six prime ministers and senior government officials in emphasizing that technological advancement should promote global cooperation, improve people’s lives, and contribute to long-term peace and prosperity rather than deepen global divisions.A central focus of the meeting was the rapid expansion of AI and its growing influence on industries ranging from manufacturing and healthcare to finance, education, agriculture, and energy. While participants agreed that AI presents enormous opportunities, they stressed that innovation must be accompanied by investments in digital infrastructure, workforce development, responsible governance, and international collaboration.The forum also highlighted the importance of preparing workers for an AI-driven economy. Experts called for stronger education systems, continuous skills development, and entrepreneurship programmes to help people adapt to changing labour markets while ensuring that technological progress leads to job creation rather than unemployment.Business leaders noted that organizations achieving the greatest success with AI are concentrating their resources on strategic, high-impact projects where technology delivers measurable productivity gains and long-term competitiveness.China’s economic transformation featured prominently throughout the discussions, with delegates recognizing the country’s leadership in artificial intelligence, renewable energy, electric vehicles, and advanced manufacturing. Participants described Asia as a major engine of global economic growth, with China expected to remain one of the world’s strongest contributors to GDP expansion in 2026.The meeting also addressed growing geopolitical uncertainty, changing global trade patterns, and the need for stronger international partnerships to maintain resilient supply chains and encourage cross-border innovation.Several new initiatives were launched during the event, including reports on emerging technologies, AI adoption, industrial transformation, digital infrastructure, and future workforce development. The World Economic Forum also unveiled its latest list of Top 10 Emerging Technologies, highlighting innovations expected to make significant real-world impact within the next five years.Energy security and climate resilience were another major theme, with participants emphasizing that investments in renewable energy, battery technology, modern electricity grids, and sustainable industrial systems are becoming increasingly important for national competitiveness.Throughout the conference, leaders agreed that innovation alone is not enough. They argued that long-term prosperity depends on effective partnerships between governments, businesses, universities, investors, and civil society to ensure technological progress benefits all communities.The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to scaling innovation responsibly, expanding access to digital opportunities, and building an inclusive global economy where artificial intelligence and emerging technologies improve productivity, create quality jobs, and support sustainable development for future generations.
