Africa’s premier artificial intelligence conference, Deep Learning Indaba (DLI) 2026, has officially commenced at Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos, Nigeria, bringing together researchers, innovators, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and students from across the continent and beyond to shape the future of AI in Africa. The week-long event runs from 2–7 August 2026 and marks the first time Nigeria is hosting the annual gathering.
Held under the theme “Sovereign Intelligence. African Scale.”, this year’s conference focuses on strengthening Africa’s capacity to develop, govern, and deploy homegrown artificial intelligence technologies. Discussions are centered on AI research, data sovereignty, ethical AI, talent development, multilingual AI, and policies that enable African countries to benefit from the continent’s growing digital economy.
The event features keynote presentations, technical workshops, research sessions, hackathons, startup showcases, and networking opportunities designed to foster collaboration between academia, industry, and government. Leading global technology companies, including Google Research and Google DeepMind, are supporting the event alongside African technology organizations and academic institutions.
A major highlight of this year’s gathering is the emphasis on building AI solutions tailored to African challenges, including healthcare, agriculture, education, language technologies, climate resilience, and financial inclusion. Organizers say the conference aims to ensure Africa is not only a consumer of AI technologies but also a creator and global contributor to the next generation of artificial intelligence innovations.
