Federal Government Launches Committee to Train 1 Million Nigerians in Digital Skills

The Federal Government has launched a national committee to train one million Nigerians in digital skills, a major step aimed at accelerating digital inclusion and strengthening the country’s fast-growing digital economy.

The initiative is designed to equip Nigerians with critical digital and technology competencies, including basic digital literacy, software development, data analysis, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and other in-demand skills needed in today’s global economy. The programme aligns with the government’s long-term goal of achieving 95 per cent digital literacy nationwide within the coming years.

Speaking on the initiative, government officials said the committee will coordinate efforts across relevant ministries, agencies, private sector partners, educational institutions, and technology hubs to ensure large-scale, inclusive, and sustainable skills development. Special attention will be given to youths, women, and underserved communities to bridge the digital divide.

According to the Federal Government, the training programme will combine online learning, physical training centres, partnerships with tech companies, and certification pathways, enabling participants to gain practical, job-ready skills that meet local and international labour market demands.

Stakeholders in the tech ecosystem have welcomed the move, describing it as a timely intervention that could boost employment, entrepreneurship, innovation, and competitiveness in Nigeria. Analysts note that digital skills development is critical as more sectors — including finance, agriculture, healthcare, and public services — undergo rapid digital transformation.

The initiative is also expected to support Nigeria’s broader ambition to position the digital economy as a key driver of economic growth, job creation, and global competitiveness.

With the committee now in place, implementation is expected to commence in phases, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s push to build a digitally empowered population ready for the future of work.
