The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has reaffirmed its ambition to position Nigeria as a leading artificial intelligence (AI) powerhouse in Africa, unveiling a bold vision centered on responsible AI adoption, digital sovereignty, and homegrown innovation.
The vision was highlighted at the AI Summit Nigeria 2026 held in Abuja, where NITDA Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, described artificial intelligence as a transformative technology capable of reshaping every sector of the Nigerian economy. His remarks were delivered by Barrister Emmanuel Edet, Acting Director of Regulation and Compliance at the agency.
Speaking on the theme, “From Policy to Progress: Accelerating Responsible AI Adoption for Nigeria’s Digital Decade,” Inuwa stressed that public trust, accountability, and transparency are essential for the successful deployment of AI technologies across government and industry. He warned that without these principles, widespread adoption and sustainable innovation would be difficult to achieve.
A major focus of NITDA’s strategy is digital sovereignty. The agency is encouraging Nigeria to move beyond being a consumer of foreign technologies and become a creator of AI solutions tailored to local realities and challenges. According to Inuwa, developing indigenous talent, strengthening research ecosystems, and supporting innovation-driven enterprises will be critical to achieving this goal.
The summit, organized in collaboration with Microsoft and MTN Nigeria, brought together policymakers, technology leaders, academics, and private-sector stakeholders to discuss strategies for integrating AI into Nigeria’s development agenda. Discussions focused on governance frameworks, infrastructure readiness, regulatory clarity, and the role of AI in driving economic growth.
Microsoft’s Director of Government Affairs for West Africa, Nonye Ujam, commended Nigeria’s efforts in developing AI governance structures, including the National AI Strategy. She, however, emphasized the need to move beyond policy formulation toward practical implementation that delivers measurable benefits for citizens, businesses, and public institutions.
NITDA’s AI vision aligns with broader initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, including plans to develop AI-enabled digital hubs, expand cloud infrastructure, support talent development, and attract investment into the country’s growing technology ecosystem. These efforts are expected to boost innovation, create jobs, and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.
Industry stakeholders believe the renewed focus on artificial intelligence could accelerate Nigeria’s transition into a knowledge-driven economy, positioning the country as a regional leader in AI innovation and digital transformation. With government agencies, private-sector players, and international partners increasingly aligned, Nigeria appears determined to play a more influential role in shaping the future of AI in Africa.
