The Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Doreen Bogdan-Martin, has called on African nations to take a leading role in shaping the global digital future by accelerating investments in connectivity, digital skills, and innovation.
Speaking at the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Plenipotentiary Conference in Abuja, Bogdan-Martin said Africa has a unique opportunity to become a global driver of digital transformation. She stressed that expanding affordable broadband access, strengthening digital infrastructure, and equipping citizens with future-ready skills are essential to unlocking the continent’s economic potential.
The ITU chief noted that while Africa has made significant progress in digital adoption, millions of people still lack reliable internet access. She urged governments, regulators, development partners, and the private sector to work together to close the digital divide and ensure that no community is left behind.
Bogdan-Martin also highlighted the growing importance of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and advanced telecommunications networks in driving innovation across sectors including education, healthcare, agriculture, finance, and public services. She encouraged African countries to actively participate in global discussions on AI governance and digital policy to ensure the continent’s interests are well represented.
The conference brought together policymakers, telecommunications regulators, industry leaders, and development partners from across Africa to discuss strategies for advancing digital transformation, strengthening regional collaboration, and promoting inclusive digital growth.
Industry stakeholders believe Africa’s young population, expanding technology ecosystem, and increasing mobile connectivity position the continent to become a major force in the global digital economy. However, they emphasised that sustained investment, supportive policies, and cross-border cooperation will be critical to achieving that vision.
The ITU’s call reinforces the growing momentum behind Africa’s digital transformation agenda and highlights the importance of collaboration in building a resilient, innovative, and inclusive digital future for the continent.
