MTN Group has renewed its call for stronger regional collaboration to create a borderless digital economy across Africa, highlighting the need for improved connectivity, harmonised regulations, and greater investment in digital infrastructure.
Speaking on Africa’s digital transformation agenda, MTN Group’s Senior Vice President, Ebenezer Asante, said the continent can unlock significant economic growth by removing barriers to cross-border digital services and expanding access to affordable, high-speed internet.
Asante emphasised the growing role of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology in extending connectivity to underserved and remote communities where traditional broadband infrastructure remains limited. He noted that combining satellite connectivity with terrestrial mobile networks could help bridge Africa’s digital divide and support inclusive economic development.
He also called for greater cooperation among African governments and regulators to harmonise digital policies, simplify cross-border operations, and encourage innovation. According to him, a unified regulatory environment would make it easier for businesses to scale digital services across multiple markets, boosting trade, entrepreneurship, and investment.
MTN believes that a borderless digital ecosystem will accelerate the adoption of digital financial services, e-commerce, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and other emerging technologies that are transforming industries across the continent.
The telecom giant further stressed the importance of public-private partnerships in expanding digital infrastructure, improving digital literacy, and ensuring that the benefits of the digital economy reach individuals, businesses, and underserved communities alike.
Industry analysts say Africa’s growing mobile penetration, youthful population, and rapidly expanding technology ecosystem present a unique opportunity to build an integrated digital market capable of driving sustainable economic growth and global competitiveness.
MTN’s latest position aligns with broader continental efforts under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and other regional initiatives aimed at promoting digital integration, innovation, and inclusive economic development across Africa.
