NIMC Strengthens Digital Identity Framework to Support Nigeria’s Digital Economy

Nigeria is advancing its digital transformation agenda following the implementation of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026, a law designed to strengthen the country’s digital identity system and improve the delivery of secure identity services.

The legislation expands NIMC’s legal authority, reinforces data protection and privacy measures, and provides a clearer regulatory framework for managing the national identity ecosystem. The reforms are expected to improve trust in digital services while supporting broader economic and governance objectives.

According to the Commission, the reforms align with the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda by promoting efficient public service delivery, financial inclusion, and wider access to digital identity services for citizens and legal residents.

NIMC has also intensified collaboration with several government institutions to integrate identity verification into public services. These partnerships are intended to simplify access to government programmes and strengthen digital governance across multiple sectors.

The Commission said the National Identity Database has grown to more than 136 million enrolment records, providing a foundation for identity verification, social intervention programmes, financial services, and other digital government initiatives.

As part of its institutional reforms, NIMC is investing in staff training and professional development to enhance service delivery and ensure effective implementation of the new legal framework. The agency believes a skilled workforce will be essential to sustaining Nigeria’s digital identity infrastructure.

Public awareness has also become a major focus of the Commission. Through increased engagement with media organisations and nationwide sensitisation campaigns, NIMC aims to encourage National Identity Number (NIN) enrolment, educate citizens on data protection, and promote confidence in digital identity services.

Officials say the strengthened legal framework will support secure digital transactions, improve access to public services, and contribute to Nigeria’s ambition of building an inclusive digital economy powered by trusted digital identity systems.
