Nigeria Leads Africa in 2026 Responsible AI Ranking
Nigeria has emerged as Africa’s top-performing country in the 2026 Global Index on Responsible Artificial Intelligence, reflecting growing international recognition of the country’s efforts to promote ethical AI development and governance.
The latest global assessment places Nigeria 38th worldwide among 135 countries and jurisdictions evaluated on their readiness to develop, regulate, and deploy artificial intelligence responsibly. The ranking measures national performance across areas including AI governance, ethics, public sector adoption, digital skills, inclusion, safety, and institutional capacity.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, described the achievement as an important milestone for Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda. According to the minister, the country’s progress demonstrates a commitment to combining technological innovation with strong governance and responsible policy development.
Government officials say initiatives such as the National AI Strategy and the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme are helping expand AI knowledge, strengthen digital skills, and prepare the workforce for emerging technologies.
The report also identifies Nigeria among countries making notable progress in AI literacy and capacity building. While many nations have introduced AI policies, the study notes that implementation remains a challenge globally, particularly in developing economies where institutional capacity and investment are still evolving.
Despite these challenges, Nigeria’s continued investment in digital infrastructure, technology education, and regulatory development has positioned the country as a leading voice in Africa’s AI landscape.
The Federal Government says it will continue supporting policies that encourage innovation, improve digital inclusion, and establish trusted governance frameworks for artificial intelligence. These efforts are expected to contribute to economic diversification, improved public services, and the country’s long-term ambition of building a technology-driven economy.
