In a bold push to deepen intra-African commerce and unlock the full potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Afreximbank is accelerating the roll-out of digital trade infrastructure and services across the continent.
At the core of this drive is the bank’s flagship digital ecosystem, Africa Trade Gateway (ATG), which integrates payment systems, trade-facilitation tools, logistics and trade-finance platforms into a seamless, pan-African digital network.
The ATG initiative, launched initially in Accra and now gaining continental traction, is designed to support businesses — large and small — by enabling trusted partner discovery, cross-border payments, streamlined customs and due-diligence procedures, and improved logistics across African markets.
Driving Smarter Borders and Logistics
Afreximbank’s digital agenda is not limited to trade matching and payments. During a recent gathering in Abuja, the bank unveiled sweeping customs reforms meant to modernise border procedures, introduce real-time cargo tracking, and replace multiple country-by-country guarantees with a unified, technology-enabled transit bond.
The reforms are anchored around a US$1 billion facility — the African Collaborative Transit Guarantee Scheme (AACTGS) — which is aimed at relaxing the bureaucratic burden on cross-border traders, reducing costs, and expediting the movement of goods across Africa.
Anchoring Infrastructure in Nigeria
Nigeria is playing a leading role in this transformation journey. In April 2025, Afreximbank inaugurated the Afreximbank African Trade Centre (AATC) in Abuja — a state-of-the-art facility that will serve as a regional headquarters, trade facilitation hub, SME incubation centre, and host a fully integrated “Digital Africa Trade Gateway” among other services.
The AATC’s multi-functional design — which blends trade finance, business advisory, logistics coordination, and market intelligence — reflects Afreximbank’s holistic approach to making AfCFTA more than just a treaty on paper. The centre is expected to play a critical role in connecting Nigerian businesses to continental value chains.
